07/12/09 - Hornets Healthy Again
The Hornets have been plagued so far this year with injuries and absentees, including a number of long term grievances.
Inspirational Captain, Dominic Hopkins had been out since 4th October after tangling with Matt Roberts in Milton Keynes had left him with a lower body complaint. However, the 6'5'' Defenceman returned to the Hornets line up last weekend to face Peterborough and is a welcome addition back in the Hornets defence.
In last nights fixture in Streatham, not only did Dom Hopkins once again lead the team out, he was joined by speedy winger Grant Rounding. Rounding has been absent since the season opener on 6th September when he sustained a broken collar bone and he registered a goal and an assist on his return.
With Hopkins and Rounding back healthy, it now means that the Hornets have a full roster to choose from for the first time since the opening game of the season and that can only be a boost as the Hornets now face another tough stretch in their fixture list.
06/12/09 - More Fixture Changes
The Bracknell Hornets have today made further changes to the 2009-10 schedule. The fixture page has been updated to show the change between the match against the Streatham Redskins.
The game was oringinally planned for Boxing Day but Streatham have showed concerns that they may be unable to fulfil this fixture, so in the best interests of the club to avoid a situation similar to that of the cancelled Haringey match, the Hornets management have decided to agree to a fixture change that will now see the Redskins visit the Hive on Saturday 23rd January.
We would again like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding in this matter.
09/11/09 - Fixture Change
The Hornet's fixture list has today been updated and there has been a change to the home game against the Chelmsford Chieftains.
The fixture was originally scheduled for the 6th March but due to an ice time clash this game has now been re-scheduled for the 19th December.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we look forward to welcoming you on the new date.
29/10/09 - Injury Reserve Prolonged
As the Hornets move towards November hopes were high that all players would return to the ice however this week has seen further set backs. Jason Falsetta was the only player to ressume skating this week as Grant Rounding and Dom Hopkins both look far from returning to the ice.
Grant Rounding has been out for the last 8 weeks after suffering a broken collar bone against Cardiff on the 6th September and scans this week have shown that the recovery process have not been as swift as first thought and that Grant will be side lined for at least another 5 weeks.
The Hornets also had more disappointment this week with the news that Dom Hopkin's injury is a lot worse than first thought. Hopkins suffered his injury following a low hit by Matt Roberts in Milton Keynes on 4th October and hasn't played since. Despite initial reports that Hopkins would be back in just a couple of weeks his return is no where in sight meaning the inspirational defender remains frustrated on the bench.
With the games coming thick and fast this season, the Hornets will be looking for any boost possible to help gel the team together and having a full roster to select from would be a good start.
17/10/09 - Former GB and Elite Player Joins the Hornets
The Bracknell Hornets are very pleased to announce the signing of former Team Great Britain and Elite League player, Mark Galazzi to their roster.
Galazzi previously played in the Elite Ice Hockey League with the Basingstoke Bison between 2005 and 2007 when he registered 15 points in over 100 games until his personal career took him to Asia where he's lived for the last 2 years. Prior to playing in the Elite League, Galazzi forged his career in the British National League where he was a fundamental part of Championship winning sides in both Guildford, during their double winning season in 03/04 and then in Bracknell the following year where he collected 2 more trophies.
Starting his hockey days in Streatham, Galazzi later progressed through the Slough Junior Hockey Club, debuting for the Jets as a young teenager and again enjoying success as the Jets where crowned Champions in 98/99.
The 6'0 forward possesses good size and speed making him very adept along the boards and in the corners. His experience will be invaluable to the Hornets as they look to kick start their year. On signing for the Hornets, Galazzi said "I cant wait to get back on the ice as any hockey player will tell you, when you spend a year out all you do is miss it. I'm also looking forward to playing with my kid brother again and from everything ive heard about the English National League, I'm definately looking forward to the challenges of this developing league".
On his latest addition Head Coach Gareth Cox commented "I'm absolutely delighted to have Gazza here. Obviously we were fortunate to already have ties to bring him here but as soon as I found out he was back in the country I did all I could to persuade him to come to Bracknell. His experience is already paying off during training and what he adds is clear to see".
05/10/09 - Injury Woes Mount Again
On Saturday night the Hornets lined up with almost a full roster. The only absentee was Grant Rounding who has been out since September 6th with a broken collar bone.
However, 48 hours later and injuries are mounting again. Craig Tribe left the home fixture part way through the second period after being caught by Mike Knights in the face, in what was his first start in 2 weeks. Tribe was taken to Hospital for treatment on a deep cut where he was stitched up.
On Sunday night in Milton Keynes, both James Galazzi and Jason Falsetta failed to make it to the third period after suffering back complaints. Its currently unknown when either player will return.
The boost received by icing an almost full squad was short lived and despite the short rest bite, the Hornets tough early schedule continues this weekend as they travel to Gillingham to face Champions Invicta Dynamos to complete match ups against all title contenders. The Hornets will be hopeful that the injury list will not be added to any time soon and that all players return as soon as possible.
11/09/09 - Away Match Travel
The Bracknell Hornets will continue to operate away travel for any supports wishing to join the team on their coach. The price will continue to be £10 per person and this Sunday, the bus will be leaving for Chelsmford at 1pm.
07/05/09 - Early Injury Strikes Hornets
The Bracknell Hornets have today announced that the injury that saw Grant Rounding leave the game mid way through the first period in their opening game has been confirmed as a broken collar bone.
The news has come as a huge blow to both the Hornets and Grant himself, who missed 8 games last year through the same injury. After making an impressive start to his first senior year, Rounding was struck down by injury which hampered his progress. Looking forward Grant expressed his eagerness to complete a full season to show what he is really capable of.
The news will equally be a blow to coach Gareth Cox though as the Hornets continue with their unfavourable schedule. The Hornets already now miss Craig Tribe for 5 matches due to personal committments and with Rounding out for at least 8 weeks offensive options have been cut short ahead of some big games.
05/09/09 - Sponsorship Opportunities Available
With the new season just over 24 hours away what better time to show your support for the Hornets.
The Hornets are still looking for corporate partners for the 2009-10 season. The Hornets can give your business vital exposure through any number of sponsorship and advertising opportunities available in a number of different formats.
Bracknell Hornet supporters can do there bit too, through the players grid. Ahead of the new season the grid as been wiped clear so you can now be the first to person to get your name against your favourite player by contributing towards their playing kit for the forthcoming season. Remember though, this is offered purely on a first come first serve basis so dont delay or you could miss out on getting the player of your choice.
For more information on either sponsorhip, advertising or the players grid email us at bracknell-hornets@yahoo.co.uk or speak to one of the Hornets team in reception on game nights.
03/09/09 - Squad Now Complete
The Bracknell Hornets are happy to announce the final signings ahead of the new campaign which bolsters the squad.
Veteran defender Gareth Wheeler and import forward Matt Ovenden return to the Hornet's line up for another year. "Both these guys have been around the squad for a few years and its good to have them on board again. Wheeler will add some cover to our defensive unit when needed and Ovie, being a non-uk trained player will make sure that the import spots are competitive", said Gareth Cox.
Joining these returning players are 3 graduates from the Bracknell Drones U-18 team. Goal tender Mark Petch, Defender Nick Templeman and forward Craig Parker have all earned roster spots with the Hornets this year. Cox comented "we've tried to put together a strong squad here again but its important to remember our real goal and thats junior development. All 3 players showed great ability and potential as juniors and now they've got a chance to compete in senior hockey. Also, it gives us great depth in the squad which will aid practice sessions and provide cover during the games so we'll never have to be short benched".
31/08/09 - Hornets Add Power to their Offence
The Bracknell Hornets are pleased to announce the additional of yet another product of their junior club with the signing of Bradley Watchorn.
Brad is a 6'3 forward who has a physical presence on the ice but also has bags of skill to go with it. Coming through the junior ranks at Bracknell, his potential was realised early as he made his senior debut with the Bees at the age of just 15. The following year Brad left the UK for Canada where he spent a couple of years playing Junior A with the Richmond Hill Rams before returning to England and the Bees. Last year Brad spent his time on Island playing with league rivals Wightlink Raiders when they were in the EPL.
Still only 19 Brad has bags of experience and plenty of unreached potential. Coach Gareth Cox said "Brad is a player who is a great all round athlete. He loves the physical aspect of game, finishing checks and standing up for the team when needed but he is also a highly skilled player and i think this was often over looked in the EPL. In our league he's going to have a much bigger role and im comfident he's going to enhance our offence significantly.
27/08/09 - Challenge Game Cancelled
It is with regret that the Hornets have to announce that the scheduled challenge match for this Sunday has had to be cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.
Having had the game confirmed and agreed by Streatham and aproved by the league for over a week, The Hornets were today told that the games sanction had been rejected due to a lack of registered players by Streatham. The Hornet's manager has spent the past 24 hours trying everything he could to find a suitable replacement for the Bruins but has been unsuccessful at such short notice.
The Hornets are deeply disappointed with these events and would like to apologise to our fans that had made preparations to attend the game.
26/08/09 - Hornets Line Up Challenage Match
The Bracknell Hornets have today given their fans a chance to see the new squad before the league campaign gets under way in September. This Sunday 30th August the Hornets have invited the Streatham Bruins down to the Hive for a challenge game.
Face Off is at 18:00 and entry to this game is covered by the Season Ticket. If you are still thinking about appling for a Season Ticket, time is running out so email us at - bracknell.hornets@yahoo.co.uk for an application form.
24/08/09 - Hornets Capture the Real McCoy
The Bracknell Hornets are excited to anounce the arrival of Canadian veteran Mark McCoy to the squad. The 34 year old utility player needs no introduction to British ice hockey having first come to these shores 15 years ago.
McCoy will be known to fans up and down the country as he as featured in almost every league over the years from the Super League to the Elite League and the British National League to the English Premier League, so is sure to be at home this year with the Hornets.
The Prince Rupert, British Columbia native had a year away from the sport last season but has kept himself in shape and is raring to go. "Its hard to walk away from this sport so im thrilled to be back and cant wait to get started with Bracknell".
Coach Gareth Cox said "A great thing about Mac is his versitility. Having seen him skate and being so impressed with his fitness levels we've been tinkering with using him as a forward. His vision and awareness are absolutely phenominal, so in this league he is going to create so much space around him for others and of course when he's in the slot he certainly hasn't forgotten where the net is". He concluded by adding "As ive said before, defensively were very happy and with this boost to our offence we're only a couple of pieces of the puzzle away from where we want to be".
19/08/09 - 2009-10 ENL Division 1 Fixtures Released
The Bracknell Hornets are pleased to announce that the schedule for the forthcoming season has finally been released and that the Fixtures page has been updated.
The Hornets will skate out for their first league match of the year on home ice on Sunday 6th September when they will host the Cardiff Dragons in what will be a barn storming opener.
The following week sees the Hornets experience both 'new boys' to the league as they host former EPLers Wightlink Raiders on the saturday before traveling to the Riverside to face newly promoted Chelmsford Chieftans.
With just over 2 weeks to go until the puck drops for the new season, time is running out for anyone who wishes to apply for a season ticket. If your interested in applying then please contact us at bracknell.hornets@yahoo.co.uk for more information.
18/08/09 - Hornets Revise Ticket Policy
The Bracknell Hornets management today announced that they have reclassified the age limits impossed on purchasing a child ticket.
The new policy will see children up to and INCLUDING the age of 16 eligable to purchase a ticket at the childens rate of £1 and only when turning 17 would be classed as an adult.
"When looking at our age classifications we decided that it was not right for someone of 16 years to be labelled as an adult as they could still be in full time education and would most likely need to be accompanied by an adult", said a spokeman.
17/08/09 - Cox Secures First Choice Defence and Adds to the Forwards
The Bracknell Hornets today announced a new face to their defensive core by completing the signing of Canadian D-man Blair Dubyk as well as returnee forward Jason Falsetta.
Dubyk, 29, hails from New Westminster, British Columbia but he grew up playing Midget AAA for the Saskatoon Blazers before moving on to the Saskatoon Junior Hockey League. Blair played his senior hockey for the Hanley Huskies before moving to London last year where he played with league rivals Haringey Greyhounds.
The strong, skillful defender had a hard time of it last year playing on a struggling Greyhounds team that only won 5 games but still managed to rack up 5+11 for 16 points. On the new challenge ahead of him Blair said "Everyone on the team seems like a good guy so im excited for the new season and most of all for being on a winning team".
On capturing Blair, Hornets Head Coach Gareth Cox commented "Im really happy to have wrapped up the defence, Blair caught my eye last year in Haringey so we got him along to see him skate and after one session I knew he was a piece of the puzzle for the Hornets. Hes physical, skates well and reads the game excellently. It also helps that hes a lefty as it gives us a further dimension to work with on the powerplay", he continued "last year we were succesful defensively so im happy with the way things are looking. We've maintained the majority of the guys which is good for cohesion as well as adding Blair and Wridey so we should be strong in that area again. Now I can concentrate on the offence".
Joining Dubyk for the forthcoming season is 20 year old Jason Falsetta. Jason was one of a number of promising juniors to come through the Guildford set up but struggled last year with a number of small injuries which kept him out of much of the season.
"Ive admired Jason for quite a while now, he is a great skater, a very hard worker and possesses good hands despite only being 20. Im looking forward to seeing what he can do in a full season".

06/08/09 - Hornets Retain Promising Youngsters
The Bracknell Hornets are extremely pleased to announce that they have managed to maintain the services of two of their most promising youngsters by signing both Alex Barker and Tom Avery. Both players graduated through the Bracknell junior club into the Hornets team last year and both made huge impacts in their rookie seasons, including call ups to the Bees.
Alex Barker is a quick forward with unbelievable skill and excelled as a junior player helping his under 18's team to a national final. It took him a little while to settle in to senior hockey but once he found is footing he soon started firing on all cylinders finishing with 14+12 from 28 games with his best performance coming in the play off semi-final loss to Invicta. His performances caught the line of Bracknell's EPL coach and he was called up to play with the Bees last year. Having had the opportunity to go else where, Barker finally agreed to return to the Hornets where he wants to put in a consistant performance all year. "I cant wait for next year and will hopefully find the form i had during the latter parts of the season from the off".
Joining Barker is fellow 18 year old Tom Avery, who also enjoyed success in his rookie season last year. Avery has fantastic hands for a defender and whilst he is defensively sound, it's often his offensive prowess that caught the eye. Avery was regularly played on the powerplay and had a hand in some very important goals through his quick transition of the puck. On his return Tom said "I'm very happy to be back. I had a lot of fun last year, got a lot of ice time and experienced a lot of responsibility so hopefully with a years extra experience i can come back, and raise my standard even more".
"Both these players are very promising and very tallented young players and we had a bit of a struggle to keep them here, but theyve both agreed to come back and im excited to see how they futher develop as they certainly have the potential to go on to be top players in this league", commented Coach Cox.
04/08/09 - Hornets Lose One and Gain One
The Bracknell Hornets can confirm that Adam Marashi has been released for the forthcoming season in order to join the Bees in the English Premier League. Marashi has backstopped the Hornets for the past 3 years and has become a very popular player. However, the Hornets have wasted no time in finding a replacement by capturing Andy Biart from the Slough Jets. Another product of the Bracknell junior system, Andy left Bracknell last season to spend the year in Slough where he backed up Dean Skinns.
"Obviously we're very disappointed to be losing a player of Adams ability, but its important to remember why we're here and thats to develop young tallent. So i am only too happy to see my players progress to the Bees. To that end Adam leaves with our full backing and support as we wish him the very best next year". Gareth Cox continued "Ive expressed the importance of goal tending this year so i had to move quickly to bring in a capable replacement, and Andy Biart is just that. Hes had a year in the EPL and that experience will be vital for when called upon this season".
29/07/09 - Hornets Bolster Defence
The Bracknell Hornets today announced another two key signings to their defensive unit with the additions of Mike Plenty and Graham Bellamy. Both players return to the Hornets roster after spending a number of successful seasons in Bracknell, including being vital members of last years defensive core that registered the best goals against record in the league.
Michael Plenty returns for his 4th campaign in Bracknell having previously played for the Slough Jets and at only 26 brings a large amount of experience with him. Plenty is a solid no nonsense defenceman who has extremely good hands for a 6' blue liner. On his return he said "Last year was a great season for us and i am looking forward to helping us compete in what will be an even more challenging league this season".
Joining Plenty in returning again this year is Graham Bellamy, returning for his 5th year with the Hornets. Like Michael Plenty, Bellamy also came from the Slough Jets having come through the junior ranks in Slough and he too will bring a great amount of experience with him despite still only 25 years old. Another tough stay at home D-man Bellamy will be a vital of the puzzle this year. He commented "I'm looking forward to another year with the Hornets, last year although we did better than some expected, we know we should have done better so it'll be good to get another chance".
On re-signing Plenty and Bellamy, Gareth Cox said "Last year we got a lot right defensively so its only natural that i wanted to re-sign these guys as i know we can all improve further. These are the types that are under-rated in the league so im only too happy to have them here in Bracknell".
23/07/09 - Galazzi Returns For New Campaign
James Galazzi
The 25 year old centre joined the Hornets in the 05/06 season and has since secured a senior role within the club and it appears that he is turning experience into goals. Last year Galazzi chipped in with 22+18 and breached the leagues top 10 scorers for the first time showing that hes got more than just physical play. On his return, Galazzi said "I'm really looking forward to the new season. We look to be putting together another competitive squad so i cant wait to get back to work. I really want to continue with the goal scoring streak to show theres more to my game".
On capturing another signature, Gareth Cox said "Its another key signing for us. Gazza does the dirty work in the corners as he doesnt mind throwing his body around and that can be vital but if he can continue to contribute all over the ice i'll be even happier".
20/07/09 - The Hornets Confirm Another 2 Re-signings
The Bracknell Hornets are delighted to announce that last years Fan's Favourite Tony Barclay and speedy winger Grant Rounding have both agreed to stay on with the Hornets for another year.
Barclay, a graduate of the Bracknell Ice Hockey Club and another local lad, returns for his 5th senior year with the Hornets. Best known for his solid 2way game, Tony is a player who contirbutes at both ends of the rink making him a vital squad player. Last term Barclay amassed a point game and that coupled with his hard work saw him voted as the Fan's Favourite player. Commenting on his return he said "It's great to be back. Im really looking forward to getting started, last year was so enjoyable so i cant wait to try and top that".
Joining Barclay by returning to the roster is 18 year old Grant Rounding. Having only stepped up to the Hornets full time last year, Grant made a huge impact by scoring a number of crucial early goals. However, injury hampered the youngsters progress when a broken arm saw him miss a large chunk of the season. Not to be deterred Rounding was quickly back skating and still managed to contribute over a point a game. The winger cant wait to get back to business though to show what he can do in a full season saying,"I'm happy to be back and looking forward to the coming season. If i can stay fit i know i can improve on last year and hopefully take on a bit more responsibility".
On his latest signings Coach Cox said "these are two vital players for the team that im delighted to have back. Both of these players are capable of racking up the numbers and thats huge as we try to put together a squad thats all capable of scoring".
12/07/09 - Tribe Returns for his 6th Successive Season
The Bracknell Hornets are very happy to welcome back Craig Tribe for the forthcoming season after he agreed to stay on for a sixth term.
The Surrey based sniper graduated through the Bracknell junior club and has been with the Hornets every since. Still only 24 years old Craig has spent the last 5 years in the English National League with stints for the Bees as well and has fast become renowned for his deadly accuracy in front of goal. Tribe has finished in the top 10 of league scorers for the previous 3 seasons including 5th overall last year with an impressive 25+30 from 31 games. He is already raring to get started and is eager to bring some silverwear to the Hive. "I'm excited about the new season already and being involved with what looks like a strong Hornets squad. I want to work hard so we can improve on a good season last year".
Gareth Cox concluded "Every team needs a 'Craig Tribe', someone who can consistantly put the puck in the net. Very few guys can match Tribey for his soft hands so we're delighted to have maintained his services for another year".
04/07/09 - Marashi and Wride to Mind the Net
The Bracknell Hornets are excited to announce that they have completed the signings of their goal tenders for the forth coming season by capturing the signatures of Adam Marashi and David Wride.
Adam Marashi rejoins the Hornets for his 6th season at the Hive where he has backstopped them to recent success. The 20 year old from Surrey has had brief stints in the Guildford and Slough junior set up but has spent the majority of his time with Bracknell, and hes glad to be back for another season "Its great to be back in Bracknell again, hopefully we'll be challenging again and looking to improve on last year".
The Hornets are also pleased to welcome 'Wridey' to the squad. The highly rated 22 year old from Camberley has signed from Division 1 rivals Haringey Greyhounds for the 09/10 season. Wride has spent recent seasons in Haringey and Milton Keynes in the English Premier League but has previous played in Bracknell before and he too has expressed his delight to be back. "its great to be coming back to my home club and i cant wait to get started with the new year".
On capturing his first choice netminders Coach Cox said, "with there being a real emphasis on strong keeping this year im delighted to have Rashi and Wridey leading the defensive unit. They're both excellent young goalies and im sure they will push each other all year. Theres a number of good goalies in the league this year but im confident the best partnership is here in Bracknell".
01/07/09 - Hornets Re-Sign Three
The Bracknell Hornets are pleased to announce that 3 key members of last years squad have agreed to stay on with the Hornets for another year. Come September, Ben Duggan, Dominic Hopkins and Ben Johnson will once again skate out in Bracknell colours.
Ben Duggan joined the Hornets last year after spending 3 years with the Guildford Flames, and went on to have a very successful debut year in Bracknell. Ben was a key member of the Hornet's top producing line chipping in with 54 points from 31 games and finishing second overall in league assists.
Dom Hopkins is another player who came to Bracknell last year following time with the Guildford Flames and he too went on to have a good year. An experienced D-man, Hopkins sured up the reguard and was a large part of the unit that conceded the least goals in the league, whilst also adding something to the offence. With great vision and a booming shot Hopkins finished second overall in the league in defenceman scoring.
Ben Johnson started last year with the Bracknell Bees but when faced with limited ice time decided to join the Hornets. His EPL experience was clear to see as a fast wheeling defenceman with an eye for a pass. Johnson re-signs with a huge amount of experience and will look to take on a bigger role this term.
Coach Gareth Cox commented "with these 3 guys coming into the squad last year, they instantly gave us something extra and with all three guys having interest from other teams im delighted to have secured their services for the coming year".
23/06/09 - End Of an Era in Bracknell
It is with great disappointment that the Bracknell Ice Hockey Club today annouces the retirement of one of its best servants.
Ross McDougall has officially retired from the game after 22 seasons playing in Bracknell citing personal commitments and injury for the decision. The ascot born utility player has become synonymous with ice hockey in Bracknell and fans of all generations will be familiar with 'Doogie' at the John Nike Arena and sad to see him no longer skating. The popular player both on and off the ice commented "Due to reoccuring injury, family and work commitments, i dont feel i can go on and commit my time the way i have done for the last 20 odd seasons. I feel that if i cant give 100% then there are a whole bunch of guys that can step in and do the job that is needed".
McDougall was part of the original crop of players when ice hockey first came to Bracknell in 1987 at the age 9. His career spanned all of the possible ages groups from Under 12's right the way through to the Hornets and Bees, making his senior debut in 1993 aged just 15. 'Doogie' spent 4 very successful years as a full time member of the Bees team between 2003-2007 where he hoisted the British National League Trophy in 2005 and then the English Premier League and Play Off titles in 2007. Retiring from the Bees at the end of the 06/07 season on a high, McDougall signed with the Hornets where his experience and leadership has helped shape the new look National League side.
Head Coach Gareth Cox said "Having a player of Doogie's calibre has been tremendous in aiding what we're trying to achieve here in Bracknell. He is a true professional and even though the legs have started to go he will always put in 100% every shift, so much so that i tried to get him to play on again one more year".
Doogie finished by adding "I have always loved playing at Bracknell and even though i've been given the chance to play for other clubs, i've always felt that my home was here. I have met so many great people and feel privileged to have been part of Bracknell history and to have been part of a great winning team with the Bees for the 4 seasons I played with them and i couldn't have asked to have a better final year playing with the Hornets, challenging for titles and playing some great hockey and getting to hang out with an awesome bunch of friends. I am already starting to miss hockey and miss the changing room and although i dont think that will change i am sure i'll be getting involved soon through coaching".
